Newcastle United manager Rafael Benitez says that the club must wait until January before making a judgement on their start to the season.

Newcastle United manager Rafael Benitez has insisted that the Magpies will not get carried away by their strong start to the season.

The North-East giants lost their opening two games of the campaign, but four wins and two draws from seven fixtures have left the club sitting in seventh place in the table.

However, Benitez has claimed that he will not assess the club's showing in the first half of the season until the start of 2018, with games with Manchester City, Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal still to come in the next two months.

The 57-year-old told reporters: "We have had some games where maybe we deserved more. It could be even better, but we have to wait until January to see our potential.

"By January, we will have played all the top sides. We have to wait a bit before we're too happy."

Newcastle are next in action when they face Burnley at Turf Moor on Monday night.
