Newcastle United boss Rafael Benitez admits that he 'does not know' when Jonjo Shelvey will be available to return from a knee problem.

Newcastle United boss Rafael Benitez has admitted that he 'does not know' when Jonjo Shelvey will be available to return from a knee problem.

The Magpies confirmed earlier this week that Shelvey had picked up an injury to his knee during the latter stages of last weekend's 2-2 draw at Bournemouth.

Benitez has ruled the 26-year-old out of Saturday's trip to Liverpool, and the Spaniard has conceded that Newcastle are still waiting to learn the full extent of the problem.

"He has a knock to his knee and he will not be available. We are waiting on the results of the scans. We don't know how serious it is. He wants to train and play but we have to check," Benitez told reporters.

Shelvey has made 21 Premier League appearances for the Magpies during the 2017-18 campaign.
