Goals from Patrick Mullins and Diego Fagundez fire the New England Revolution to a 2-1 win over DC United to maintain their lead at the top of the MLS Eastern Conference.

New England Revolution maintained their lead at the top of the MLS Eastern Conference courtesy of a 2-1 win over DC United.

The visitors started the game well and Collin Martin went close when he powered a low effort from just outside the area that went inches wide of the post.

New England responded and Teal Bunbury should have given his side the lead as he collected Patrick Mullins's low shot on the six-yard box, but he could only fire his overhead kick over the bar.

The Revolution were beginning to dominate the game and Mullins came close when he raided down the left and fired a shot at goal which forced a good save from Bill Hamid.

After the break, the home side did take the lead as this time Mullins was able to beat Hamid when he picked up a loose ball in the area and lifted an effort over the keeper.

However, United managed to find an equaliser as Cristian fired a cross in from the left which fell into the path of Fabian Espindola, who fired the ball past Bobby Shuttleworth.

New England regained the lead within four minutes when Bunbury's cross beat the outstretched hand of Hamid and Diego Fagundez turned the ball in at the back post.

The game ended on a sour note for the visitors when they were reduced to 10 men as Eddie Johnson was sent off for kicking out Kelyn Rowe allowing the Revolution to hold out for the victory.
