Mark van Bommel furious over racist chants

Holland's Mark van Bommel claims that several of his teammates were subjected to racist abuse during a Euro 2012 training session in Krakow.

Holland's Mark van Bommel has claimed that several of his teammates were subjected to racist abuse during a Euro 2012 training session in Krakow.

The Dutch skipper was left seething after a group of around 500 spectators allegedly directed a chorus of monkey chants towards the squad's black players.

Van Bommel has since launched a verbal attack on governing body UEFA, accusing them of trying to downplay the incident, according to The Mirror.

He said: "What happened is a real disgrace, especially after getting back from Auschwitz, that we were confronted with this.

"We will take it up with UEFA and if it happens on the pitch during a match we will talk to the referee and ask to leave the field."

He also hit out at Dutch FA chiefs, who claimed not to hear the abuse.

"If people say they didn't hear it, then they need to open their ears," he added. "If they did hear it and didn't want to hear it, then that's even worse."

Holland's Euro 2012 campaign gets underway against Denmark on Saturday.
