Eric Steele hoping for David de Gea stay at Manchester United

Former Manchester United goalkeeping coach Eric Steele admits that he would "love" to see David de Gea remain at Old Trafford and not join Real Madrid.

Former Manchester United goalkeeping coach Eric Steele has urged David de Gea to stay with the club.

The Spanish shot-stopper has been heavily linked with a move to Real Madrid in recent weeks.

Reports in Spain have even suggested that the 24-year-old has already agreed personal terms with the European champions.

Steele, who was part of the United coaching staff when De Gea moved to Old Trafford in 2011, believes that the player would be best served by remaining with the Red Devils.

"Personally, I'd love him to stay because I think he's done a fantastic job," he told Sky Sports News. "I'm hoping the lure of Champions League football might just tempt David but there's only one man who knows the answer of where he wants to go."

United boss Louis van Gaal claimed on Sunday that the club would not let De Gea leave "easily".
