Bryan Robson claims that his former club Manchester United do not need to sign a midfielder this summer.

Former Manchester United captain Bryan Robson has insisted that the current squad is not in need of midfield additions.

Critics have suggested that United's options in the middle of the pitch are lacking the type of player that can dominate a match, such as Yaya Toure at neighbours Manchester City.

However, speaking to the Manchester Evening News, Robson has claimed that the team's success in winning the Premier League title this season has highlighted the fact that they are not "desperate" for a midfielder.

"I just think that everybody wants to pick on any minor point instead of looking at all the positives. People keep saying we need another central midfield player to go alongside Michael [Carrick]," said Robson. "Giggsy has done well in there but all these players aren't getting any credit because people want to see a dominant one. But hold on a minute - we have won the title and are a load of points ahead of our rivals.

"To win as many games as they have and be in total command has been fantastic and you have to have a very good midfield to do that.

"So when people keep going on about being desperate for a central midfield player – no we are not. We would have been desperate if we hadn't won the league. Then we would have been desperate but we are not."

United manager Sir Alex Ferguson recently revealed that he is hoping to add two players to his squad during the summer.
