Manchester United's latest recruit Juan Mata has revealed that he was surprised to learn that Chelsea had sanctioned his move to Old Trafford.
The Spaniard sealed a club record £37m switch to the reigning Premier League champions on Saturday evening, having fallen out of favour with manager Jose Mourinho at Stamford Bridge this term.
When asked how he felt about the transfer, the midfielder told MUTV: "To be honest, it is a bit surprising.
"But I have to say I'm really grateful to Chelsea, to the owner, everyone who works at the club and the fans - they voted me the best player in the last two seasons and I will always be grateful.
"But the chance to come to Manchester United was a great moment for me to carry on with my career and join another massive club."
The Spain international could make his debut for the Red Devils during Tuesday's visit of Cardiff City.
