Manchester United reportedly identify 19-year-old Schalke winger Rabbi Matondo as a cheaper and lower-risk alternative to signing £100m-rated Jadon Sancho.

Manchester United have reportedly identified Schalke 04 winger Rabbi Matondo as a back-up transfer target if they are unable to land first-choice Jadon Sancho this summer.

The Red Devils are thought to be leading the race for 20-year-old Sancho, who has enjoyed another stellar season with Borussia Dortmund and has been heavily linked with a move away when the window reopens.

However, Dortmund are unlikely to sell for anything below £100m, which could prove to be a sticking point in the post-coronavirus market.

The Manchester Evening News reports that United have been weighing up alternative options if they are priced out of a deal for Sancho, and that Matondo is one of the names on their list.

Like Sancho, the 19-year-old is a product of the Manchester City academy and left for the Bundesliga in search of more regular first-team chances.

Matondo, who has made 14 appearances for Schalke this season, fits United's desired profile of young, British players, and the club regard him as a relatively low-risk and low-cost option.

The winger is a regular member of the Wales squad under former United stalwart Ryan Giggs, who is also understood to have recommended Joe Rodon to the club.
