Manchester United closing in on Victor Lindelof deal

Manchester United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward is reportedly optimistic of buying Benfica centre-back Victor Lindelof for less than his £38m release clause.

Manchester United are reportedly edging closer to completing a big-money move for Benfica centre-back Victor Lindelof.

The 22-year-old has been heavily linked with a switch to Old Trafford in recent days as Jose Mourinho looks to bolster his defensive options in January.

United could lose Eric Bailly for up to six weeks at the Africa Cup of Nations, while Chris Smalling has struggled with injuries so far this season.

Benfica have reportedly set an asking price of £42m for the Sweden international, although his release clause is thought to stand closer to the £38m mark.

However, The Guardian reports that United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward is optimistic about the chances of completing a deal for less than that.

Lindelof cost Benfica just €50,000 (£42,000) in 2012 and was only promoted from the B side at the start of last season.
