Manchester United are reportedly prepared to battle Manchester City for the signing of one of Sporting Lisbon's key players.

Manchester United have reportedly identified Sporting Lisbon winger Francisco Trincao as a potential summer transfer target.

Ruben Amorim is known to be already assessing his options in the market on the back of his current United players struggling to adapt to his 3-4-3 system.

The Portuguese has delivered just 10 wins from his 24 matches in all competitions, United sitting down in 14th place in the Premier League table.

Acquiring players who are capable of being deployed in either wing-back position is of importance to Amorim, Patrick Dorgu having already been signed from Lecce.

However, Amorim is also in need of fresh faces who are capable of being used in the two creative roles behind the main striker, whoever that may be.

Reunion with Sporting star on the cards?

According to A Bola, United officials have placed Trincao on their list of potential arrivals during the next transfer window.

There have been times during Trincao's time at Sporting where he has not necessarily been regarded as an indispensable member of the starting lineup.

During 2024-25, though, the 25-year-old has contributed eight goals and 11 assists from his 32 starts in Primeira Liga and the Champions League.

Trincao has been used on the right and in the centre under several different head coaches this term, yet his best form came under Amorim before his move to Old Trafford.

The report alleges that United face stiff competition from Manchester City, a result of their sporting director Hugo Viana moving to the Etihad Stadium.

With Trincao having less than 18 months remaining on his contract, a renewal will be required to deter interested parties from stepping up their interest in the former Barcelona man.

Previous Premier League stint now irrelevant?

Having spent a season on loan at Wolverhampton Wanderers, Trincao is not a stranger to plying his trade in the Premier League.

During 2021-22, he would chip in with just two goals and one assist spread across 28 appearances, accumulating 1,342 minutes of football in the process.

Since then, Trincao has rebuilt his reputation to an extent where he deserves to be viewed in high regard by higher-profile teams.
