Bayern's Pep Guardiola: 'Bastian Schweinsteiger must decide his own future'

Bayern Munich boss Pep Guardiola insists that he wants Bastian Schweinsteiger to stay at the club, but admits that the final decision rests with the midfielder.

Bayern Munich manager Pep Guardiola has insisted that he wants to keep Bastian Schweinsteiger at the Allianz Arena, but admits that the final decision is up to the midfielder.

Reports emerged on Thursday claiming that Premier League giants Manchester United have opened talks with the 30-year-old regarding a possible summer move.

The German World Cup winner is believed to have been targeted by United boss Louis van Gaal as the Dutchman is keen to add some more experience to his side at Old Trafford.

On Friday, Guardiola expressed a desire to keep Schweinsteiger at the Bundesliga outfit, but the former Barcelona boss has suggested that the midfielder is considering his future.

"I can't make the call for Basti," Guardiola told reporters. "He's a Bayern player and he is under contract.

"He's an outstanding legend at the club, but he has to decide, not Pep or [chief executive] Karl-Heinz Rummenigge. He has a contract and is part of my plans for next season."

Schweinsteiger came through the youth ranks at Bayern.
