Paulo Fonseca wants permanent deal for "unbeatable" Chris Smalling

Roma boss Paulo Fonseca describes Chris Smalling as "unbeatable in one-on-ones" and targets a permanent move for the on-loan Manchester United defender.

Paulo Fonseca has confirmed that Roma are interested in signing "unbeatable" defender Chris Smalling from Manchester United on a permanent basis.

The English centre-back has revived his career during a season on loan with the Serie A club, where he has made 28 appearances in all competitions.

Smalling's form has seen him emerge as a target for Premier League clubs, including Arsenal, but Roma are also keen to strike a deal.

"He surprised me," Fonseca told A Bola. "He's a defender that had never left England and he arrived in a league very demanding of tactics, where details make the difference.

"Chris adapted very quickly. He's an extraordinary guy, very intelligent. He has characteristics that I really appreciate in the centre.

"He's fast, nearly unbeatable in one-on-ones. He has a great ability to read the play and anticipate. He was very important for this club.

"If possible, I would like him to stay. He's a great professional and person, it's a pleasure to have him here with us."

Smalling, who has made 323 appearances for the Red Devils in all competitions, hinted last month that he hopes to stay at Roma beyond the end of the season.
