Team News: Juan Mata starts against Stoke City

Louis van Gaal picks Juan Mata over Ander Herrera as Manchester United welcome Stoke City.

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has picked Juan Mata over Ander Herrera for the visit of Stoke City to Old Trafford tonight.

The change is just one of two from the Dutchman from the side that lost to Southampton in the league 10 days ago, with Michael Carrick recovering from a knee injury to replace Morgan Schneiderlin, who drops to the bench.

Bastian Schweinsteiger continues to sit out entirely through injury, while Adnan Januzaj fails to feature in the matchday squad and Memphis Depay once again starts the game on the bench.

For Mark Hughes's visitors, there are four changes from the team that lost 3-0 to league leaders Leicester City 10 days ago.

Ryan Shawcross's back injury means a recall for Marc Muniesa in the backline, while Jonathan Walters is the only man to remain in a changed attacking four.

Marko Arnautovic and Bojan Krkic return alongside Walters as support for Peter Crouch, who leads the line, while Xherdan Shaqiri, Joselu and Mame Biram Diouf all drop to the bench.

There is no place for the Potters' new record signing Giannelli Imbula, who is forced to watch the game from the stands after missing the registration deadline.

Manchester United: De Gea, Darmian, Smalling, Blind, Borthwick-Jackson, Fellaini, Carrick, Lingard, Mata, Martial, Rooney
Subs: Romero, McNair, Varela, Schneiderlin, Herrera, Pereira, Memphis

Stoke City: Butland; Pieters, Muniesa, Wollscheid, Johnson; Whelan, Afellay; Arnautovic, Bojan, Walters; Crouch
Subs: Haugaard, Bardsley, Ireland, Odemwingie, Joselu, Diouf, Shaqiri
