Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea has said that the team were left "saddened" by the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson.

The Scot left the game this month after over 26 years in charge at Old Trafford, and De Gea admitted that the squad were left upset by the developments.

"The day of Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement was a bit strange. The fans and all of the city of Manchester turned out. It is a shame for him to go, he has been great there," he told reporters.

"The team is good [but] we are saddened by the departure of Sir Alex, but in has come another great coach [David Moyes] with a different style of play, so we will try to follow along the same lines and with the same manner.

"But now we have a new coach. We are all waiting to return to see how things go."

De Gea signed for United for a reported £18m in 2011 from Atletico Madrid.
