Robin van Persie "purposely overtrained" by Manchester United

Dutch fitness specialist Raymond Verheijen hits out at Manchester United once again for 'overtraining' striker Robin van Persie.

Dutch fitness specialist Raymond Verheijen has slammed Manchester United once again for 'overtraining' striker Robin van Persie.

Verheijen previously criticised United manager David Moyes after the Netherlands international suffered injuries during the Red Devils' pre-season tour of Asia and Australia.

This week, it was announced by Van Persie's national team that the striker will be rested from the Netherlands' friendlies against Japan and Colombia.

Verheijen, who has revealed that Van Persie has been taking painkillers, responded to the news by writing on Twitter: "Very smart decision to give RVP total rest in the upcoming week. No national team. Hopefully he can stop using pain killers after next week.

"Hopefully next season RVP will have a balanced pre-season so he does not have to use pain killers at all. But maybe this is a bit ambitious?

"RVP missed 1st week pre-season, had to travel 30 hrs & 10 hrs time difference. Still the Man U 'experts' decided to purposely overtrain him?"

Van Persie scored the only goal in United's victory over his former club Arsenal last Sunday.
