Chris Smalling: 'Goals will come for Wayne Rooney'

Chris Smalling is certain that Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney will remind the Premier League of his talismanic qualities following a dry spell.

Chris Smalling has insisted that misfiring Manchester United teammate Wayne Rooney is not suffering a crisis of confidence.

The 30-year-old striker drew a blank in Saturday's 0-0 draw with Newcastle United to extend his barren spell to four games this season.

The Red Devils have netted twice from their three Premier League outings, and Smalling says that their final-third problems are not limited to just Rooney.

"No, I think if you see in his play, he is running in behind and he is giving himself opportunities," he is quoted as saying by Sky Sports News when asked if Rooney was low on confidence.

"I think we probably had double figures in terms of chances, not just to Wayne but for the whole team.

"It's just a case of one of those falling in, but the majority of the team is getting those opportunities so if we keep creating those chances, they will come eventually."

United travel to Belgium this week for the second leg of their Champions League playoff with Club Brugge, with Louis van Gaal's side leading 3-1.
