Paul Scholes 'expected more Manchester United progress'

Paul Scholes criticses Louis van Gaal's record since taking over as Manchester United manager.

Paul Scholes has criticised Louis van Gaal for failing to make more progress since becoming manager of Manchester United.

The former midfielder pointed to the Dutchman's record since taking over at Old Trafford, which is four points worse off after 10 games compared with the Red Devils under the stewardship of David Moyes.

Scholes also blasted the former Bayern Munich coach for not addressing problems in the heart of the United defence.

In a column for the London Evening Standard, he wrote: "Louis van Gaal talks about progress. Well, I expected Manchester United to have a better record by this stage of the season.

"It is difficult to figure out what Van Gaal is thinking during games. His demeanour doesn't change throughout. He looks a bit subdued. Certainly he appears very different to the man you saw on the touchline at the World Cup finals.

"And the problem in defence should have been addressed in the summer. It was not as if Van Gaal was unaware that Phil Jones, Chris Smalling and Jonny Evans were susceptible to injuries."

United will look to return to winning ways when they host Crystal Palace on Saturday.
