Jamie Redknapp hopes Wayne Rooney's goal can kickstart run of form

Jamie Redknapp says that Wayne Rooney's goal for Manchester United at the weekend could 'spark him into life'.

Jamie Redknapp has claimed that Wayne Rooney's goal at the weekend could be the start of a positive run for the Manchester United captain.

The 30-year-old, who has struggled to find form this season, scored the winner in the 77th minute of United's 2-1 win over Swansea City on Saturday.

Redknapp has concerns that Rooney could lose his spot to Harry Kane in the England team ahead of this summer's European Championships, but is hopeful that his latest goal will turn things around for the striker.

"On form right now Kane is England's first choice," Redknapp wrote in the Daily Mail. "Of course Rooney can play with him but now he needs to go on a scoring run.

"I remember Sir Alex Ferguson saying Wayne scored in bursts. He did last season - two purple patches for club and country and two lean spells - and it's happened again this season. He started well then went dry. Maybe this goal could spark him into life again."

United are currently fifth in the Premier League table.
