Jose Mourinho encouraged by Manchester United's "evolution"

Jose Mourinho insists that it is "unfair" Manchester United find themselves 13 points behind Chelsea in the Premier League, as their performances have deserved more.

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has admitted that he is "very happy with the evolution" of his side since taking over from Louis van Gaal in the summer.

The Portuguese has endured a turbulent opening seven months to life at Old Trafford, winning just five of his first 14 top-flight games in charge - the Red Devils' worst-ever start to a Premier League campaign.

Despite United finding themselves 13 points off the summit already, Mourinho has once more reiterated that his side have so far been unlucky and deserve to be higher up the table based on performances alone in the first half of the campaign.

"I find it unfair, I find that we should have much more points than we have because you look at the table and it looks like other teams are better than us which, in my opinion, is not true," he told Sky Sports News.

"So many draws that we deserve victories. If you could transform these draws into victories we would be very close to the top of the league, in between the top three or top four so I find more unfair but there is only one way - keep working.

"I am very happy with the evolution of the team. I am very happy with the difference between the team I inherited and the team which is playing now and I keep saying the same: when you play very, very well you can expect good things to arrive so no frustration, just hope."

United host Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford on Sunday, where they have drawn each of their last four league games - the first time that has happened since 1980.
