Manchester United could reportedly face a points deduction and other punishments after protests inside Old Trafford led to their game with Liverpool being called off.

Manchester United could reportedly be facing a points deduction after fan protests at Old Trafford led to their game against Liverpool being called off.

Supporters made their way onto the Old Trafford pitch in a demonstration against United's owners the Glazer family, and the game was eventually postponed after initially being delayed.

A police officer was left needing emergency treatment after clashing with protestors outside the ground, and missiles were thrown in the direction of pundits during the pitch invasion.

According to the Daily Mail, the Premier League and FA are investigating the incident, and United could ultimately be docked points in the wake of the protest.

The report adds that the Premier League can impose point deductions where a club fails to ensure player and staff safety, while the FA have the power to issue fines and suspend the club from competitions.

A defeat for United on the day would have handed Manchester City the Premier League title, and the Red Devils remain 13 points behind the league leaders, while Leicester City are only four points behind in third.
