Sir Alex Ferguson wants improved senior players

Sir Alex Ferguson says that his more experienced defenders must improve ahead of the Manchester derby on Sunday.

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has called on his senior players to "get their act together" ahead of the Manchester derby.

Ferguson made wholesale changes as United were beaten 1-0 by CFR Cluj at Old Trafford in the Champions League on Wednesday, although they had already qualified for the last 16 of the competition.

While the boss was pleased with the efforts of Phil Jones, Chris Smalling, Scott Wootton and Alex Buttner, Ferguson has made it clear that he will be relying on his more experienced players against Manchester City.

"The defence did their job quite well," said Ferguson. "I was pleased at the commitment and the composure was very good.

"But that doesn't solve the issue of defending. That was the future.

"On Sunday, the experienced players have to get their act together. It is as simple as that."

United face City at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.
