Sir Alex Ferguson hits back at Roy Hodgson's claims by suggesting that managers should be allowed to rest their players during international breaks.

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has disagreed with England manager Roy Hodgson's claims by suggesting that there is nothing wrong with resting players during international breaks.

The Three Lions boss criticised domestic clubs for using international friendly fixtures as an excuse to give their players a breather from their club campaign.

While Ferguson has stated that he has "no issues" with allowing players to represent their countries for competitive fixtures, the Scotsman believes that the same attitude shouldn't apply to friendly matches.

"I've got no issues at all with the actually competitive part - the World Cup, European Championships - the players should always be available for that, but you can't tell me that should apply itself for friendly games," Ferguson said in a press conference.

Hodgson has called on clubs to take international breaks more "seriously".
