Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson says that Southampton were "unfair" to sack manager Nigel Adkins.

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has claimed that it is "hard to believe" the news that Southampton boss Nigel Adkins has been sacked.

The Liverpool-born boss was sacked from the former Championship club and swiftly replaced by recently-sacked Espanyol manager Mauricio Pochettino.

"It is a crazy world," Ferguson said in a press conference. "It is hard to believe. There is no point saying we are surprised. It seems very unfair."

Adkins was under pressure in the early stages of the Premier League season but was given the boot after his side suffered just two defeats in 12 games.
