Matty Longstaff scored on his Premier League debut as Newcastle United recorded a 1-0 win over Manchester United at St James' Park on Sunday afternoon.

The Red Devils had plenty of the ball during the 90 minutes of action, but Longstaff's 72nd-minute strike saw Steve Bruce's side pick up a huge three points against their out-of-form visitors.

Read how it all unfolded in Sports Mole's minute-by-minute live commentary of the action below.

Hello and welcome to Sports Mole's live text coverage of the Premier League clash between Newcastle United and Manchester United from St James' Park. Newcastle are currently 19th in the Premier League table with just five points to show from their first seven league games, while United have made their worst start to a top-flight season since 1989-90 - sitting in 12th position in the table with just nine points. Stay tuned for live minute-by-minute updates!

TEAMS!

NEWCASTLE: Dubravka; Schar, Lascelles, Clark; Yedlin, M Longstaff, S Longstaff, Willems; Almiron, Joelinton, Saint-Maximin

MAN UNITED: De Gea; Dalot, Tuanzebe, Maguire, Young; Fred, McTominay; Andreas, Mata, James; Rashford

Newcastle boss Steve Bruce has made five changes to the team that started against Leicester City last time out with DeAndre Yedlin, Ciaran Clark, Matty Longstaff, Jetro Willems and Allan Saint-Maximin coming into the XI. Miguel Almiron and Joelinton both keep their spots in the final third, but Isaac Hayden is not available following his red card against Leicester last time out.

As for Man United, their team shows three changes from the one that started against Arsenal with Diogo Dalot, Fred and Juan Mata coming into the side. Luke Shaw, Paul Pogba and Anthony Martial are among those still injured, while Victor Lindelof is also out of the squad after picking up a problem against AZ in the Europa League on Thursday night. Mason Greenwood, Angel Gomes and Tahith Chong are all on the bench for the visitors this afternoon.

KICKOFF:  Newcastle kick things off this afternoon...

... the pitch has had an awful lot of rain on it and therefore it should be a fast-paced encounter. Newcastle have already broken into a dangerous position through Almiron, but Young did well to make the block. Awful defending from the United midfield there.

Newcastle have a free kick in a dangerous area as Fred brings Almiron to the deck...

... Schar's attempt is straight into the wall. Not great.

First bit of possession for United as they settle on the ball, but Newcastle are the team showing the greater energy at the moment, which has pleased their supporters. You do get the feeling that the first goal - if there indeed is one - would be absolutely huge here.

Neither team has really been able to fashion anything of note in the first eight minutes, but Newcastle have shaded the game overall. Nothing much from United in terms of attacking pressure with the likes of Rashford and James very quiet thus far here.

United really do need so, so much more from Rashford. The Englishman is a willing runner in the final third but might be better off just camping inside the penalty box. United are in control of the possession at St James' Park with 10 minutes on the clock.

Joelinton wins a flick against Tuanzebe and Saint-Maximin threatens to race onto the ball, but De Gea is out to make the claim. The away side are fortunate there.

SHOT!  Saint-Maximin's strike from distance was always moving wide of the United goal.

Very, very sluggish from United in the opening 15 minutes. Absolutely nothing happening in the final third, which has been the case for much of the season bar Chelsea to be honest.

YELLOW CARD!  Yedlin (Newcastle) is booked for a foul on McTominay.

United manage to work the ball into the Newcastle box with Mata finding McTominay, but the offside flag prevents the midfielder from having the chance to make the breakthrough.

Spell of possession for Newcastle in the last couple of minutes, but the home side are not really going anywhere with it. United then turn the ball over and enjoy some possession, although the move breaks down without causing any harm to Bruce's outfit.

Lazy from Rashford as the forward is caught offside when Mata finds him with a clever pass. The tempo and body language from the visitors is not great at the moment.

United win a free kick in a decent-ish position in a wide area as Schar brings James to the deck. The visitors will surely send Maguire and Tuanzebe forward here...

... Young delivers straight into the arms of Dubravka. Really, really poor.

Young has the chance to deliver another free kick into the Newcastle box as James is fouled on the opposite side by Matty Longstaff. Once again, though, Young's delivery is poor and Newcastle can clear their lines. Still goalless in this Premier League clash.

Young delivers a dangerous cross into the Newcastle box, but Rashford refuses to make a move towards the near post. Better pressure from the visitors here, though.

OFF THE BAR!  Oh wow! Matty Longstaff has just found the top of the crossbar with a brilliant strike from outside the penalty box! Almost a huge moment on his Premier League debut.

CLOSE!  Another chance for Newcastle as Schar gets across Young at the near post to meet a corner, and the centre-back's header just drops over the United crossbar.

YELLOW CARD!  McTominay (United) picks up a booking for a poor tackle on Sean Longstaff.

Little under 15 minutes of the first period remaining, and still nothing from United in the final third of the field. It just has to be better from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side here.

Nothing from Rashford in the first 34 minutes of this game. James has had his moments, but Mata and Pereira have also been incredibly quiet for the 20-time English champions.

Excellent defending from Dalot to clear ahead of Saint-Maximin, and United then manage to deal with the resulting corner. There is a stoppage, though, as Young and Schar clash inside the box. Play is yet to resume at St James' Park here.

Young and Schar are back on their feet, play continues with the score still 0-0. Bruce will be fairly pleased with his team's performance thus far but Solskjaer cannot be.

Again another move breaks down with Fred failing to find the run of James. Andy Carroll has been sent to warm up and the Englishman receives a huge cheer from the home fans.

CHANCE!  Huge chance for Newcastle as Almiron breaks into the United box, but Maguire is across to make a very important block. Excellent defending from the centre-back.

SAVE!  Comfortable save for Dubravka to keep out a strike from Pereira, but at least it is finally a shot on target from the away side, who have been poor again.

Newcastle have another chance to threaten from a corner as Willems sees a shot blocked behind by Fred, but the delivery from Sean Longstaff is poor. Still 0-0 here.

Tuanzebe has been the main positive for United in this first period - he has been excellent alongside Maguire at the back. Can either side nick a goal before the break?

CHANCE!  Huge chance for United to make the breakthrough as Young finds the head of Maguire inside the Newcastle box, but the centre-back somehow misses the goal. Wow.

We are into the second of two additional minutes at the end of the first period. The half-time break is probably coming at a good time for Newcastle as United are improving here.

HALF TIME:  NEWCASTLE 0-0 MAN UNITED

So there we have it - the referee brings the first period to a close with the two teams level at 0-0. Newcastle were the better side for long stages of the first half, although Maguire has just missed an incredible chance to send Solskjaer's side ahead at St James' Park.

STATISTICS! United had 68% possession in the first period, but only registered one shot on target from three attempts. Newcastle, meanwhile, had eight attempts - none of which were on target. Three yellows to report in the opening 45 minutes - Fred, McTominay and Yedlin.

BENCH WATCH! Not an awful lot of experience on the United bench to be honest, but the likes of Chong, Gomes and Greenwood would provide the visitors with something different. Newcastle, meanwhile, have options in the shape of Atsu, Carroll, Gayle and Shelvey.

KICKOFF:  United resume the action at St James' Park...

... no changes from either side at the break, which is not too much of a surprise. However, you suspect that both managers will have alterations in mind as the play develops.

YELLOW CARD!  Schar (Newcastle) is booked for handball.

SHOT!  Almiron fires wide of the United goal after being released by Saint-Maximin - the angle was always against the attacker, but it was a good break from the home side.

Play resumes here following a stoppage - Young taking a kick on the back of the head by Yedlin. Well, it almost resumes because Mike Dean will not release the ball from his hands.

Newcastle decide to keep the ball rather than play it back, which makes Pereira furious. Anyway, the play is back underway, and the score is still goalless at St James' Park.

Mata and Rashford are almost playing as a front two for United at the moment with James very wide on the left. The visitors are currently dominating the possession here.

Pass, pass, pass from United, but the away side are not really going anywhere with it. Mason Greenwood is already warming up for the 20-time English champions, who have again been incredibly poor in the final third of the field. Something has to change.

James delivers a dangerous cross into the Newcastle box following a half-cleared corner, but the ball just has too much weight. Carroll is about to enter here...

NEWCASTLE SUB! Carroll replaces Joelinton for the home side.

Newcastle, as expected, are looking to deliver into the United box whenever possible. Carroll, if nothing else, does cause all sorts of issues with his height and power. Still goalless at St James' Park with little over 30 minutes of football remaining here.

Pereira delivers a dangerous cross towards James at the far post, but the Wales international just cannot reach it. Better from United in that move.

MAN UNITED SUB! Marcos Rojo replaces Dalot for the away side.

Still plenty of time for a goal in this game, and United are certainly offering more of a threat at the moment. That said, clear opportunities are still at a premium here.

Newcastle are struggling to get out of their own half at the moment with United very much on the front foot. As mentioned, though, Dubravka is not having to do too much.

CLOSE!  Carroll heads a Yedlin cross over the United goal at the far post.

YELLOW CARD!  Almiron (Newcastle) is booked for simulation.

MAN UNITED SUB! Greenwood replaces Mata for the away side.

Greenwood has joined Rashford in the final third with United very much in a 4-4-2 formation at the moment, and it is causing Newcastle a lot more problems now.

Greenwood finds Young with a good pass inside the Newcastle box, but the left-back sees his low cross towards Rashford crossed. Good work from Greenwood there.

CHANCE!  James delivers a super cross towards Rashford inside the Newcastle box, but Schar does really well to clear ahead of the England international, who was waiting to score.

GOAL!  NEWCASTLE 1-0 MAN UNITED (M LONGSTAFF)

GOAL!  Newcastle make the breakthrough in the 72nd minute as Matthew Longstaff, on his Premier League debut, finds the back of the net with a strike from the edge of the box. Willems did well to find the midfielder, who fired past De Gea into the bottom corner.

Huge, huge final 15 minutes or so coming up here. Can United find a response? Surely another defeat here would put Solskjaer under pressure. The Norwegian wants time to rebuild the club, but the results have been just so incredibly bad this season.

CLOSE!  Rojo heads a free kick over the Newcastle goal from a tight angle.

Little over 10 minutes of the second period remaining, and you do get the feeling that there is another goal in this match. Newcastle are flooding players forward once again, but United do have players on the field capable of finding the back of the net.

YELLOW CARD!  Rojo (Man United) is booked for a foul on Almiron.

Rashford fires a cross straight out of play as the minutes continue to tick on. Solskjaer looks lost on the touchline - his team are giving him absolutely nothing once again.

SHOT!  Fred strikes harmlessly wide of the Newcastle goal from distance.

United have a free kick in a dangerous position as S Longstaff fouls Young...

... Pereira's free kick is straight into the wall. Awful.

NEWCASTLE SUB! Saint-Maximin is replaced by Atsu for the home side.

Another United move comes to nothing as Greenwood cannot make proper contact on a cross from Young. Little over five minutes of the second period remaining here.

MAN UNITED SUB! Chong replaces Young for the away side.

Nothing happening for United as the clock ticks on. Not long left here.

NEWCASTLE SUB! Almiron is replaced by Krafth for the home side here.

We are into the first of four minutes of additional time here.

Once again, nothing from United in terms of a response. Plenty of ball for the Red Devils but nothing to concern Dubravka between the sticks. Time is very much of the essence.

Newcastle clear their lines once again, and that could well be that. Although the Red Devils have just won a free kick in a dangerous position following a handball...

... McTominay has just thrown himself to the ground. Looked to be an elbow from Carroll.

Pereira delivers straight into the arms of Dubravka. Game over.

FULL TIME:  NEWCASTLE 1-0 MAN UNITED

So there we have it. The referee brings the second period to a close with Newcastle running out 1-0 winners over Man United on home soil. It is a terrific result for the Magpies but another awful, awful performance from Solskjaer's struggling team.

That is just about it from me this afternoon, but I shall leave you with the match report from the 90 minutes of football. Thanks for joining us and hope to see you again very soon!
