Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has confirmed that Ashley Young will be out of action for a "long time" with a groin injury.
The Dutch boss revealed to MUTV on Friday that the winger requires surgery after suffering a 'severe' groin problem.
The 30-year-old was substituted in the 42nd minute of his side's 1-0 victory over Liverpool at Anfield last weekend.
Young, who has made 16 appearances so far this season, has been joined on the treatment table by defender Phil Jones and midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger; all three will miss Saturday's match against Southampton at Old Trafford.
