Liverpool are reportedly ahead of Newcastle United in the race for Crystal Palace's Marc Guehi, who has informed friends of his desire for an Anfield switch.

Liverpool have reportedly moved ahead of Newcastle United in the mind of Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi.

The 24-year-old burst onto the international stage for England at this summer's Euro 2024 in Germany, partnering John Stones at centre-back in the absence of Harry Maguire.

Guehi impressed the Three Lions faithful with his speed and defensive intelligence, helping Gareth Southgate's side to reach the final against Spain in Berlin.

Although a first-ever European Championship glory was ultimately not forthcoming for Guehi and England, the Palace man still received plenty of plaudits.

Oliver Glasner's Eagles have endured a tricky start to the 2024-25 campaign, failing to earn a win from their first five matches, leaving them 16th in the Premier League table.

Liverpool a "bigger club" than Newcastle in Guehi's mind?

According to Football Insider, Crystal Palace and England star Guehi has informed close friends that he would like a move to Liverpool in the near future.

The report claims that the defender would prefer a switch to the Anfield giants over Newcastle, with the 24-year-old viewing the Reds as a "bigger club" in comparison.

Eddie Howe's Magpies are known admirers and pursuers of Guehi, submitting four bids for the Three Lions centre-back so far in this calendar year.

With Palace valuing the 19-cap international at £75m, Newcastle failed to agree a suitable deal with the London club over a summer switch.

It is understood that Guehi "would jump" at the chance of joining Liverpool, who are in the hunt for the Premier League title against Arsenal and Manchester City.

Virgil van Dijk successor?

Liverpool supposedly fell short of making a genuine push for the services of Guehi during the summer due to Arne Slot's reservations over the player's suitability.

Now five matches into the new campaign, it is believed that the Dutchman is convinced that the Palace enforcer would be able to play a pivotal part at Anfield.

Entering the final year of his contract, Virgil van Dijk will not be on Merseyside forever and the Reds would be smart to begin succession planning at centre-back.

Jarell Quansah has emerged out of the Liverpool academy in recent times, although there are still questions marks over whether he can be a first-team option for years to come.
