Manchester City are targeting Newcastle's Fabricio Coloccini and Liverpool's Daniel Agger as possible replacements for Joleon Lescott.
The Premier League champions are keen to splash the cash leaving a question mark over the future of the England centre-back.
Roberto Mancini is reportedly keen on the duo along with Athletic Bilbao's Javi Martinez, with 29-year-old Lescott having just two years left on his contract.
The former Everton defender tasted Premier League glory for the first time last season but suffered a defeat to Italy in Euro 2012.
Talks will be held now that the England squad have returned from Poland and Ukraine, along with Gareth Barry and James Milner.
Manchester City's spending won't end with a defender though, with the champions also keen on Arsenal skipper Robin Van Persie and Napoli striker Edinson Cavani.
