How Liverpool could line up against Aston Villa

Sports Mole looks at how champions Liverpool could line up for Sunday's Premier League clash with Aston Villa at Villa Park.

Liverpool could make English top-flight history on Sunday when they take on Aston Villa at Villa Park looking to become the first side ever to win their opening four games in three successive seasons.

The champions have beaten Leeds United, Chelsea and Arsenal en route to a perfect record after three games - one of only four teams who can still boast maximum points heading into gameweek four.

However, this weekend pits them against another one of that quartet as Villa look to build on their two wins, and two clean sheets, from two games so far.

Here, Sports Mole looks at how Jurgen Klopp could set his side out for the contest.

Liverpool will be without the in-form Sadio Mane after confirming on Friday evening that the forward has tested positive for coronavirus, forcing him into a period of self-isolation.

Mane becomes the second high-profile Reds player to test positive recently, with new signing Thiago Alcantara also currently in isolation and unavailable for this match.

Liverpool could welcome Jordan Henderson back into their side, though, with Klopp confirming that his captain is "not injured anymore".

Match fitness is still a concern and so it is possible he may have to settle for a cameo off the bench, but having also been included in the England squad and not been sidelined for too long he is in contention to return to the starting XI.

Kostas Tsimikas will play no part, having joined Joel Matip and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain in the treatment room.

Klopp made a host of changes for his side's EFL Cup clash with Arsenal in midweek, with Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah the only regular starters to keep their place in the team.

As such, the star names will return for this one with the likes of Alisson Becker, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Joe Gomez, Andrew Robertson, Fabinho and Roberto Firmino coming back into the side.

Robertson and Mane scored late goals to turn a 1-0 defeat into a 2-1 win for Liverpool in the corresponding fixture last season, with the latter's stoppage-time winner making it six goals in as many Premier League appearances against Villa.

However, in his absence Diogo Jota is expected to make his first Premier League start for the club, having netted the third goal against Arsenal last weekend.
