Former Liverpool defender Phil Thompson says that there is no reason why the Reds can't finish the season in fourth spot.

Former Liverpool defender Phil Thompson is confident that the Reds can secure fourth spot in the Premier League table if they remain consistent.

The Merseyside outfit secured back-to-back victories in the top flight for the first time this season and now reside four points away from a Champions League place.

When asked if Liverpool could clinch fourth, Thompson told the club's official website: "Absolutely, why not? A few weeks ago you might have thought it was a bit too far away.

"Four points off fourth spot is a fantastic achievement. We've been chipping away so we're still in there and I think there is a great opportunity to get into a Champions League spot."

Liverpool's local rivals Everton currently occupy the fourth spot in the table.
