Martin Skrtel keen to inspire Liverpool turnaround

Martin Skrtel hopes that his late equaliser against Arsenal proves a catalyst for better days for Liverpool this season.

Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel is hopeful that his last-gasp header in Sunday's 2-2 draw with Arsenal proves to be a watershed moment in the Reds' season.

Brendan Rodgers's side have come in for criticism for a series of lacklustre performances and results that has seen the Merseysiders occupy 10th place in the Premier League at Christmas.

However, their display against the Gunners was another sign that Liverpool - who beat Bournemouth last week to move into the League Cup semi-finals - are getting their groove back.

"Obviously it is disappointing because we wanted to get the three points but to go behind and then score a late equaliser is good and I think we showed that spirit, fight, desire," he told reporters.

"It was a great goal and a big one for us. To get a point was reward for fighting to the end and I am glad for myself because I've had a few chances this season but couldn't score, and now I've finally scored.

"The goal and the performance can help turn things around because there has been a lot of criticism of us and I hope it will change and be better in the second half of the season."

Rodgers's troops travel away to Burnley on Friday, before hosting Swansea City and Leicester City on December 28 and January 1 respectively.
