Paul Scholes: 'Steven Gerrard should have joined Chelsea'

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes believes that Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard should have joined Chelsea back in 2005.

Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes has claimed that Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard should have joined Chelsea back in 2005.

The Reds skipper revealed on Friday his decision to move away at the end of the season to conclude a 26-year association with the Anfield side.

Gerrard was courted in the summer of 2005 by the Blues and handed in a transfer request before eventually staying with the Reds.

Scholes told The Independent: "It's difficult for me to say as a United fan but it's a pity Gerrard never won the league.

"If there was a time to leave Liverpool and join another club then he should have gone to Chelsea when they tried to sign him for a second time after [Liverpool] had won the Champions League.

"It always looked like Chelsea would win the league more than once."

Gerrard is reportedly considering offers from Major League Soccer.
