Brendan Rodgers: 'We must retain short-term focus'

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers insists that his side can't get ahead of themselves as they look to win their first top-flight title in 24 years.

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers is adamant that his side must take their quest to win the Premier League one game at a time.

The Reds are currently second in the table and face rivals Manchester City and Chelsea in the coming weeks, which could see them secure their first top-flight title since the 1989-90 season.

Rodgers told reporters: "I could speak all day about the games against City and Chelsea, but there really is no point looking beyond the next game. That's West Ham. It's a big game. They are in good form, with six wins out of nine, and they will be difficult opponents.

"If you look too far ahead, it gets too daunting. When you climb a mountain, you climb it in stages. You don't do it in one hit. We divide our season into chunks of games and after West Ham we will be into the last of a block of five games.

"Once we reach that point, we will look at the next block and see what we need. It really is done on a game-by-game basis from that point."

Liverpool face West Ham at Upton Park later today.
