Jamie Redknapp urges Premier League to help support other clubs

Jamie Redknapp urges the Premier League to support lower-league clubs who have been affected by the coronavirus suspension.

Former Liverpool midfielder Jamie Redknapp has called upon the Premier League to support clubs lower down the English football pyramid amid the coronavirus pandemic.

All matches in top-level English football have been postponed due to the outbreak of COVID-19, which could see lower-league teams enter serious financial difficulties.

Speaking to Sky Sports News, Redknapp has urged those at the top of the game to help out the clubs lower down the pyramid, saying: "When the world is better and we can all reset, it is vitally important the Premier League and other clubs help and do whatever they can to keep clubs going.

"So many smaller clubs could go out of business from this, they are going to need a bit of help. It would not harm the Premier League clubs, given all the money the league creates, to agree to do something.

"So many people want to go and watch their team play on a Saturday. If you take that away from their lives and livelihoods it could have an impact on finance and mental health.

"People need football as a release so we need to make sure football does everything it can to give these clubs the financial help to keep going."

It was announced on Tuesday that National League side Barnet had put 60 non-playing staff on notice of redundancy due to the pandemic.
