Liverpool set out to equal a 53-year-old club unbeaten record against Newcastle United when they travel to St James' Park for Saturday's Premier League clash.

Liverpool will be aiming to equal a 53-year-old club unbeaten record against Newcastle United when they face Eddie Howe's side at St James' Park on Saturday lunchtime.

The Reds saw off the Magpies 3-1 at Anfield on December 16 - their ninth top-flight game in a row without defeat against Newcastle since a 2-0 loss away from home in 2015.

Jurgen Klopp's side have since taken eight points from the last 12 on offer at St James' Park - winning two and drawing two in that four-game unbeaten streak.

Should the title-chasing Reds also avoid defeat on Saturday lunchtime, it will mark the first time since May 1969 that they have gone five games unbeaten on Newcastle's turf in the league.

That five-game unbeaten run lasted until October of that year, with Bill Shankly's side going down 1-0 to Alan Foggon's goal at St James' Park.

Mohamed Salah is also out to set a new Reds record at St James' Park, with no Liverpool player scoring and assisting in seven separate Premier League matches in a single season before.

Klopp's side will rise to the top of the Premier League table for at least a few hours with at least a point on Saturday before Manchester City take on Leeds United.
