Lampard: 'Rangers a good job for Gerrard'

Taking over as Rangers boss would present Steven Gerrard with a "great opportunity" to begin his senior managerial career, according to ex-teammate Frank Lampard.

Frank Lampard has tipped Steven Gerrard to take over as Rangers manager, describing it as a "great opportunity" for his former England teammate.

Gerrard is understood to have been offered the top job at Ibrox following Tuesday morning's news that interim boss Graeme Murty has left the role.

The 37-year-old's only previous coaching experience has come at Liverpool, where he has spent nearly a year managing the Under-18s side.

Lampard feels that the time is right for Gerrard to quit Anfield and test himself north of the border, however, telling talkSPORT: "In terms of the size of the club and knowing Steven pretty well, I think it's a great opportunity for him.

"If it feels right, I think he can handle that pressure from his playing days, he's no stranger to that with the career he had in the game.

"He has cut his teeth at Liverpool with the young lads there and at some point Steven is going to step out of that and go into managing men, managing a first team. So that's why I think Rangers would be a great opportunity for him."

Rangers have placed Jimmy Nicholl and Jonatan Johansson in temporary charge until the end of the campaign.
