Fulham manager Martin Jol wants to tie Clint Dempsey down to a new contract at Craven Cottage amid reports linking him with a move away from the club.
The American has netted 22 goals in all competitions this season and has attracted the attention of the Premier League elite.
Arsenal are thought to be interested in the midfielder, while Liverpool this week publicly admitted that they are admirers.
With Dempsey's contract set to expire at the end of next season, Jol wants to end speculation over his future by having him sign a new deal with the Cottagers.
"As you know we talked to him and hopefully he will sign a contract to keep him here for the next three years," he said.
"If not, he's still our player because there is no club that has made an approach for him.
"Of course it's nice if [Liverpool] are positive about him. I'm very positive about a few Liverpool players because I like them a lot but it doesn't mean we can afford to buy them."
The Dutchman also revealed that he is hopeful of sealing a deal to bring loan star Pavel Pogrebnyak to the club on a permanent transfer.
