Daniel Agger injures ribs in freak gym accident

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers reveals that Daniel Agger is sidelined with a rib injury picked up in a gym accident.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has revealed that Daniel Agger missed last night's 2-2 draw with Swansea City after injuring his ribs in the gym on Sunday afternoon.

Agger picked up the bizarre knock after moving to avoid contact with a falling dumbbell, stretching his side to sustain rib damage.

Rodgers has revealed that the Danish international is also a doubt for Saturday's match against Southampton, with Liverpool's medical staff now waiting to see if the problem settles down over the next few days.

The Reds boss told the Daily Mail: "As for Daniel, It's too early to say whether he will be fit for Saturday. He had a real freak incident in the gym.

"Just before he was coming out to train, he overstretched trying to prevent a dumbbell falling on his foot.

"He has overstretched and yanked his side. We are waiting to see if that settles dow over the next few days. If it doesn't, we have got ample replacements. That is why we brought in extra players."

Mamadou Sakho replaced Agger at the Libery Stadium to make his Liverpool debut last night, playing alongside Martin Skrtel in central defence.
