Jurgen Klopp confirms Joe Gomez anterior cruciate ligament injury

Jurgen Klopp confirms that Joe Gomez has suffered a cruciate anterior ligament injury.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has confirmed that Joe Gomez has suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury.

The defender was substituted in England Under-21s' 3-0 win over Kazakhstan U21s on Tuesday, leading to reports that he could miss the rest of the season.

Klopp confirmed the extent of Gomez's injury in a pre-match press conference, but said that Liverpool will wait for further diagnosis before setting a date for his return.

He said: "Gomez came here and I met him for the first time. What a wonderful young boy – tall and muscles in the right positions, but [he has] an injured knee. It's an ACL.

"Now we have to make a further diagnosis and we will see when he has surgery. From this point on it goes in the other direction and he can count the days until he's back. He's a very young guy. It was not the best day in his life, of course.

"But I'm pretty good at waiting for players, young players especially. This is his home and we will do everything so that he can come back as soon as possible."

Klopp also revealed that Christian Benteke and Roberto Firmino will not feature against Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday.

"Benteke and Firmino are on their way. We have to wait until next week. For sure, not Saturday. And Thursday, I don't think so. Maybe [next] Sunday."

Klopp's first game in charge of the Reds sees him take on Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane in a 12.45pm kickoff on Saturday.
