Brendan Rodgers: 'Liverpool not good enough to progress'

Brendan Rodgers concedes that Liverpool's performances throughout the group stage were not good enough to secure them qualification to the Champions League last 16.

Brendan Rodgers has conceded that Liverpool's performances throughout the group stage were not good enough to warrant Champions League progression.

In their first appearance in the competition for five seasons, the Reds bowed out on Tuesday following a 1-1 home draw with Basel which left them third in Group C, with only five points from their six games.

Rodgers admits that his side only have themselves to blame for falling short of their own expectations.

"The expectation was to get through the group and we haven't done that," he told reporters.

"It wasn't good enough over the course of the group, but we will learn from the experience. We need to be better."

On the Basel game, Rodgers added: "First half we were very disappointing, our possession and our position in the game was disappointing. Technically we were way short, but second half the players were magnificent."

Steven Gerrard's 81st-minute equaliser gave 10-man Liverpool, who had earlier had Lazar Markovic controversially sent off, late hope at Anfield, but the Swiss outfit hung on to finish second to Real Madrid.

The Merseysiders will now enter the draw for the last 32 of the Europa League.
