Mohamed Salah aims to break a Liverpool Champions League goalscoring record set by Steven Gerrard in Wednesday's quarter-final second leg against Benfica.

Mohamed Salah will be out to break a Liverpool goalscoring record set by Steven Gerrard when the Reds welcome Benfica to Anfield for the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final tie on Wednesday night.

Jurgen Klopp's side boast a healthy 3-1 advantage from the first leg at the Estadio da Luz, in which Ibrahima Konate, Sadio Mane and Luis Diaz were on target alongside Darwin Nunez's consolation for Benfica.

Salah has not enjoyed his finest period in front of goal since the international break, but he has nevertheless amassed 28 goals from 39 appearances in all tournaments this term - eight of which have come in the Champions League.

The 29-year-old has now struck 14 goals in 23 Champions League games for Liverpool at Anfield, and one more on Wednesday would see him become the Reds' highest scorer in the Champions League at the ground.

Salah is currently level on 14 with Gerrard, whose record he equalled with his side's second goal in a 2-0 home win over Porto back in November during the group stages.

The Egypt international is yet to extend his Liverpool stay beyond the summer of 2023 and recently offered a cryptic update when asked about ongoing contract negotiations.
