Brighton & Hove Albion beat Leeds United to end poor start to season

Sami Hyypia records his first league win as Brighton & Hove Albion manager with a 2-0 victory over Leeds United.

Brighton & Hove Albion have ended their disappointing start to the season by beating Leeds United 2-0 at Elland Road.

Joao Teixeira needed just five minutes to open his account for the club on his full debut as he latched on to a pass from Bruno before calmly slotting home.

There were few positives to take from the first half for Leeds, with the hosts' only opportunity before the break being wasted as Michael Tonge dragged his strike wide from the edge of the box.

Brighton should have doubled their advantage before the break following a free-flowing move, but Inigo Calderon could only head Adam Chicksen's cross over the crossbar.

Neither side managed to look threatening in the early stages of the second half until the hour mark, when Craig Mackail-Smith fired a volley straight at Marco Silvestri.

After missing an earlier chance to equalise for the hosts, Tonge looked like he had levelled the scores with a drilled effort, but Calderon responded well to clear the ball off the line.

Leeds were forced to send more players forward in the closing stages, and Brighton should have taken advantage of the space being created when Mackail-Smith picked out Rohan Ince, who could only hit the outside of the post.

However, there was still time for Brighton to add another goal as Kazenga LuaLua capitalised on a free kick just outside the box to fire home his side's second and secure the win.
