Honduras are on course to join opponents Japan in the last eight of the Olympics after a goalless first half at the City of Coventry Stadium.

Honduras are on course to join opponents and group leaders Japan in the quarter-finals after entering the break 0-0 at the City of Coventry Stadium.

Japan have already qualified due to their victories over Spain and Morocco in their opening two pool matches.

They named a weakened lineup for this afternoon's clash and that was evident in the first-half action as Honduras enjoyed the better of the period.

Mario Martinez squandered an early chance for the Central American nation, while Antony Lazano and Jerry Bengston both had efforts well saved by Japan stopper Shuichi Gonda.

Wigan Athletic defender Maynor Figueroa also came close with a free kick late in the half but Gonda was again on hand to keep the scores at a stalemate.

A point will be enough for Honduras to advance to the quarter-finals.
