Mick McCarthy says that he made an error in releasing Jason Scotland to join Barnsley.

Ipswich Town manager Mick McCarthy has conceded that he may have made a mistake in allowing Jason Scotland to leave the club on a free transfer.

Following his release from Portman Road in January of this year, 34-year-old Scotland has gone on to score five goals for Ipswich's relegation rivals Barnsley.

Should Barnsley win their game in hand, they would go above Ipswich into 19th place and with that in mind, McCarthy has admitted that he perhaps acted in haste.

"Listen, of course I regret the fact he's ended up at Barnsley. It looks like a mistake doesn't it because he's scored four goals. Five is it? Well it's an even bigger mistake then isn't it?" he told the East Anglian Daily Times.

"Did he look like he was going to do it here? It wasn't evident to me or anyone else here, but fair play to him. He's been given a new lease of life and good luck to him and good luck to them.

"There was no animosity whatsoever when he went. It looks like a mistake, it looks like a daft move, but I can't do anything about it now – it's happened. There is no point beating myself up over it."

Scotland scored 19 goals during his three-year stint with Ipswich.
