The first chance of the game fell to the Nerazzurri just moments into the start, as Diego Milito shot over the Cagliari crossbar.
Juan Jesus headed just wide from an Antonio Cassano delivery in the seventh minute, before Cagliari's Nene forced Samir Handanovic into making a good save.
Inter pulled ahead in the 10th minute when Rodrigo Palacio headed home Cassano's cross from close range.
However, that only spurred on Cagliari, with Radja Nainggolan going close on three occasions by the half-hour mark.

The visitors eventually equalised, and the goal came in the 43rd minute when Marco Sau turned in Andrea Cossu's cross from the centre of the Inter box.
Milito almost restored Inter's one-goal advantage immediately when he latched on to Cassano's through-ball to shoot at the Cagliari goal, but Michael Agazzi made a good save.
The Argentine striker came close again in the opening minutes of the second half, but failed to keep his shot on target from close range.
Milito then saw his attempt on the Cagliari goal saved just before the hour mark, before Cassano headed Walter Gargano's header just high.
Mauricio Pinilla was unlucky not to put Cagliari 2-1 up in the 66th minute when his shot from a narrow angle came off the post.
However, moments later Sau fired in from close range to put the visitors in the lead.

Andrea Ranocchia had a good chance to equalise five minutes later, but his shot was saved by Agazzi.
Inter did equalise with eight minutes of normal time left on the clock when Davide Astori diverted Ricky Alvarez's cross into his own net.
