Simon Grayson baffled by "staggering" referee's error

Huddersfield Town boss Simon Grayson blasts Mike Russell after the referee failed to send off Sheffield Wednesday winger Jeremy Helan this afternoon, despite booking him twice.

Huddersfield Town manager Simon Grayson has admitted that he can scarcely believe the mistake made by referee Mick Russell in this afternoon's match against Sheffield Wednesday.

Russell booked Owls winger Jeremy Helan twice in the first half of a frantic Yorkshire derby but failed to dismiss the Frenchman.

Huddersfield should have played more than hour with a man advantage, but Helan stayed on the pitch despite animated protests from the Town bench.

Grayson believes that the error is inexcusable given the importance of the game.

He told reporters: "I think he's probably written the wrong number down in his book, which is staggering.

"I also think he should have been helped by his officials, who should be overruling because they all know, when a referee makes a mistake like that, who he's booking. He's not done it deliberately, but you can't make major mistakes like that.

"I'm not going to say Wednesday going down to 10 men would have guaranteed us winning the game, but it would have certainly helped us and what if the lad had gone on to score or created the winning goal? It would have been a massive talking point, which it is already."

A frustrating goalless draw means that Huddersfield have now gone nine games without a win to halt an early-season charge up the table.
