Roberto Martinez: 'Everton were second best'

Everton manager Roberto Martinez criticises his side's performance in their 3-2 defeat away at Aston Villa, admitting that they were "second best".

Everton manager Roberto Martinez laid into his side following their 3-2 defeat at Aston Villa, admitting that they were "second best" and "not good enough".

Christian Benteke netted a first-half brace before Belgian compatriot Romelu Lukaku pulled a goal back for the Toffees from the spot on the hour, but Tom Cleverley added a third for Villa to make Phil Jagielka's late header redundant.

Martinez told reporters after the game: "In the first half, we were second best. We didn't compete as we normally do - that's not how we've been performing.

"The second half was completely different. We created enough to get something out of the game. It was disappointing to give 45 minutes away. That was not good enough, that's not the level we set for ourselves."

Everton slip to 11th in the Premier League table following their defeat at Villa Park.
