Everton apologise to supporters for not consulting them enough over a new design of the club's crest.

Everton have apologised to their fans for not consulting them properly over the club's new badge.

Following last week's unveiling of the new, modern design, 22,000 fans signed a petition against the new crest.

The club said in a statement on their website this evening: "We regret we didn't ask every Evertonian about something that matters so much to every one of you."

The club's Latin motto Nil Satis, Nisi Optimum - which means 'nothing but the best is good enough' - and two wreaths have been removed from the new design.

The statement went on to say that they would not backtrack on the decision and that the new design would be used in 2013-14.

"We remain firm in the belief that our crest should be modernised - not a unique or unprecedented situation and one we know our fans would accept and embrace. Effective logos are simple and streamlined," the statement added.

The club said that they would be seeking more supporters' views on any changes for the 2014-15 season onwards.
