Everton end Oldham Athletic's FA Cup run to reach quarter-finals

Everton reach the last eight of the FA Cup by seeing off Oldham in their fifth-round replay.

Everton have set up an FA Cup quarter-final at home to Wigan by seeing off the challenge of League One side Oldham Athletic in their fifth-round replay this evening.

The hosts went ahead on the quarter-hour mark when Darron Gibson's cross picked out Kevin Mirallas and the Belgian steered home.

Visiting Oldham came within centimetres of equalising instantly but former Everton man Jose Baxter's chip bounced out off the inside of the post.

Leighton Baines doubled Everton's lead in the 34th minute from the spot after Connor Brown was adjudged to have handled in the area.

The Toffees' place in the final eight was all but confirmed 17 minutes after the interval when Leon Osman's scuffed header managed to find its way into the net.

Oldham pulled one back straight away when Matt Smith headed in his fourth against Merseyside clubs in this year's competition - he scored twice against Liverpool in the fourth round and once in the reverse against Everton.
