The Swiss side gave themselves a glimmer of hope when Tim Howard scuffed a shot following a corner just before the quarter-hour mark.

Sekou Sanogo was first to the rebound and he bundled the ball home to put his side a goal up on the night.

However, the Toffees were given the chance to equalise from the spot when Steven Naismith was brought down by opposition goalkeeper Marco Wolfli.

The livewire Belgian striker stepped up and duly planted the ball into the corner of the net to restore parity on the night and allay any fears the hosts may have had.

Better was to come for Roberto Martinez's charges as Luke Garbutt charged down the left wing before sending a cross into the Young Boys box, where Lukaku was at hand to volley home.

Three minutes before the break, Darron Gibson played an inch-perfect ball for Kevin Mirallas to run on and slam home the third of the night for the Toffees.

Young Boys, down and out by this stage, could have been further behind after the restart when Mirallas cut inside and slotted the ball towards the far post, but Wolfli managed to tip it over the bar with his foot.

Arouna Kone, who came on for Lukaku after the Belgian was subbed off with an apparent hamstring strain, then smashed the base of the post with a long-range effort.

Into added time, Leon Osman glanced a header into the opposition net, but he was judged to have fouled his man in the build-up and so the goal was disallowed.

It mattered little because seeing out the latter stages of the match was a mere formality for Everton, with the final whistle confirming their position as the last English club in the last 16 of the Europa League.
