Wayne Rooney: '2018 World Cup could be my last tournament'

England captain Wayne Rooney suggests that the 2018 World Cup could be his last major competition should the Three Lions qualify for the tournament.

England skipper Wayne Rooney has hinted that the 2018 World Cup in Russia could be his last chance to help the Three Lions to success in a major tournament.

After England's dismal showing at Euro 2016, Sam Allardyce has replaced Roy Hodgson as the national team manager and on Monday evening, he confirmed that Rooney would continue to captain the side during their upcoming qualifying campaign.

However, in his first press conference since being told that he would keep the armband, Rooney has acknowledged that he may not feature at another competition after the next World Cup.

The 30-year-old told reporters: "Realistically I won't have many tournaments beyond Russia 2018, so I'm planning to enjoy these next two years and try and help the team improve."

Rooney will feature for England when they take on Slovakia in their first qualifying fixture on Sunday.
